learning outcomes and indicators

Global Cities identified nine student learning outcomes that are explicit, measurable, and developmentally appropriate. They include four global outcomes (appreciation for diversity, cultural understanding, global knowledge, and global engagement) as well as five general outcomes (digital literacy, language communication, self-efficacy, academic engagement, and critical thinking) that support all learning, such as digital literacy.

In addition to identifying evidence of progress on those outcomes, we have defined a corresponding set of 112 empirical indicators of student growth. These encompass the rich set of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that support global competence, such as synthesizing different perspectives on an issue and using digital tools to research and share credible information.

Codebook for global student learning outcomes

The Codebook for Global Student Learning Outcomes, is a tool for evaluators and teachers interested in determining how well students are demonstrating global learning in any program or classroom. It also assists teachers in understanding how students are learning and what aspects of their curricula are sparking student learning.

Teachers can use the Codebook to assess progress in learning by coding and analyzing student writing. Educators and researchers can use the codebook to design, evaluate or implement global competency curricula and programs.

The Codebook and video guide are currently available for download in four additional languages: Català (Catalan), қазақ (Kazakh), русский (Russian), and Español (Spanish).
